Cader bags U-14 Singles at Tennis Nationals

The promising Basith Cader put up a determined performance to clinch the Boys’ Under-14 Singles title at the National Tennis Championships, continued at the SLTA Clay Courts in Green Path yesterday.

The schoolboy from D. S. Senanayake College figured in a gruelling three-setter and eventually held his nerves to snatch a hard fought 7-6, 1-6, 10-3 victory over Methika Wickramasinghe.

Meanwhile, in the Women’s Open event, Anjalika Kurera, Saajida Razick and Rukshika Wijesuriya were able to record impressive victories in their respective quarter-finals.


Boys’ Under-14 final: Basith Cadar beat Methika Wickramasinghe 7-6, 1-6, 10-3.

Women’s Singles (quarter-finals): Anjalika Kurera beat Vishmi Serasinghe 6-2, 6-1. Saajida Razick beat Hasali Gajaba 6-1, 6-4. Rukshika Wijesuriya beat Neyara Weerawansa 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Girls’ Under-18 (quarter-finals): Nelani Jayasuriya beat Niska Vivekanandan 6-1, 1-6, 10-8. Vishmi Serasinghe beat Dinethya Dharmarathne 6-2, 6-1. Dinara de Silva beat Hasali Gajaba 6-3, 2-2 and retired. Saajida Razick beat Anithra Dharmarathne 6-4, 7-5.
