Italy bound trawler taken into custody in Reunion Island

Sri Lanka’s security intelligence has received information that a multi-day vessel named Dehemi Duwa, owned by a leading human smuggler, has been seized and those in the vessel arrested by forces of the Reunion Islands within their territorial waters in the Indian Ocean region.

It is said that this multi-day vessel left Negombo port on July 21 and 46 people from Negombo, Marawila, Chilaw, Kalpitiya, Puttalam and other areas were on board.

The security intelligence agencies have found that they were smuggled out of the country by a major human trafficker residing in Ambakadawila, while claiming that they would be offered jobs in Italy or another country.

Based on the current information, it is reported that the relevant human trafficker has navigated this multi-day vessel. It is reported that his wife and his family have also travelled with him

Intelligence agencies have discovered that this vessel left Negombo on July 21, but suffered a technical fault on the international sea border in the Indian Ocean region.

It is also said that the vessel which suffered a technical fault had somehow been restored and was moving again along its course.

But Sri Lanka’s security intelligence agencies have confirmed that the Reunion Island Coast Guard has taken into their custody the vessel with its crew.
