Basnagoda Reservoir Project will be restarted – Prasanna

Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said yesterday that budget allocations will be made for restarting the Basnagoda Reservoir Project, which was stopped due to the economic crisis.

The Minister also said that he has already discussed this with the relevant institutions.

He was participating in a discussion yesterday at the Ministry Auditorium in Battaramulla with relevant officials regarding the resumption of the Basnagoda Reservoir Project.

The construction work of this water project was started in April last year to provide drinking water for over 2,00,000 people in the Gampaha District.

The Minister also said that it is the Government’s responsibility to fulfill the water needs of the people in the journey towards a self-sufficient economy.

Therefore, he said that he will take all necessary steps to restart the Basnagoda Reservoir Project immediately.

The Minister also said that the Government has also focused on restarting other development projects that were stopped due to the economic crisis.

He added that he believes that the necessary financial allocations will be allocated through the budget that will be presented to Parliament in November.

The Basnagoda Reservoir is being constructed under the Gampaha, Attanagalla, and Minuwangoda Joint Water Project and the Irrigation Department is constructing the reservoir under the guidance of the Irrigation Ministry.

The main dam of the proposed reservoir is to be constructed in Karasnagoda across Basnagoda Oya, a tributary of Atthanagalu Oya.

It is designed to be constructed with a concrete dam (2.5m tall and 130m long) to store 3.5 million cubic metres (MCM) of water.

This will supply drinking water and industrial water for several areas in the Gampaha, Attanagalla, Minuwangoda and Mirigama Divisional Secretariat Divisions.
