Plans to introduce solar panels for religious places - Minister

Move to reduce electricity tariffs with renewable energy:

Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera told Parliament yesterday that he has instructed his State Minister to formulate a programme to provide solar panels for places of worship to reduce their electricity bills. The Minister answering an oral question in Parliament yesterday, said a large number of government institutions have already started installing solar panels. Parliament can also install solar panels. We can provide technical support in this regard,” he added.

The Minister also said that a programme to install solar panels on the roofs of low-income families is currently being implemented together with the Housing and Urban Development Ministry. Around 48,682 electricity connections have already been provided to religious places countrywide.

It is suggested to go for renewable energy as there is no alternative to manage the electricity bill despite the recent tariff increase.

Installing solar panels on the roof is a timely solution for this. We should plan in such a way that the electricity bill will be less. We are currently discussing with the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and Embassies to get their assistance for our move,” he added.
