Jaffna farmers will get urea for Maha season - Amaraweera

The Farmers in Jaffna will receive the first consignment of urea for the 2022/23 Maha cultivation. Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera confirmed this at a special meeting at the State Timber Corporation Auditorium recently where the issue of releasing land in the Northern Province belonging to the Wildlife and Forest Department for promoting agriculture in the North and the Lagoon Development Programme were discussed.

Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda and Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera chaired the meeting. Minister Amaraweera said that since the Fisheries Minister has been endeavouring for gaining food security, the first load of urea of 200 MT will be dispatched to the peninsula.

The Agriculture Minister instructed Agriculture Ministry Secretary Chandra Herath, the Wildlife Director General and the Forest Department Director General to take appropriate action to release land belonging to the two departments to promote and expand freshwater fishing industry in the North.

It was also decided to appoint a committee to prepare a Cabinet paper to develop lagoons including Nandikadal and Sambalthivu along with NARA and NAQDA scientists and experts. The report in this regard will be submitted before October 10.

Parliamentarians of the Wanni District, Fisheries Ministry Secretary Indu Rathnayake and Ministry Director General Susantha Kahawaiththa were present.
