Viyathpura sells first house to Sri Lankan expat for Dollars

The first housing unit attached to the housing scheme at Viyathpura belonging to the Urban Development Authority (UDA) was sold yesterday under the government programme of selling house units on dollar terms.

Accordingly, a Sri Lankan working in Dubai has purchased this house for US$ 40,000. Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga recently took steps to provide necessary facilities for Sri Lankans residing and working abroad to buy houses built for middle-income earners by the UDA for dollars.It was also decided to give a 10 percent discount to those who buy these houses on dollar terms.

A Sri Lankan working in Dubai has purchased a two-bedroom house in the Viyathpura housing scheme yesterday at a cost of Rs.15.8 million. He bought the house for Rs.14.2 million following the reduction of a 10 percent discount when buying in dollars. So far, many Sri Lankans residing and working abroad have applied for purchasing lots of houses attached to the several housing schemes implemented by UDA. The Urban Development and Housing Ministry expects to achieve a target of US$275,000 by December this year through this programme.

Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said that Sri Lankans residing and working abroad has given an opportunity to buy houses built by the UDA for middle-income earners on dollar terms. The construction of two such housing projects has already been completed by the UDA. Borella Ovalview scheme consists of 608 housing units and the Angoda Lake Crest scheme consists of 500 housing units among them.
