Committee to decide on recruitment of professionals to public service

Areas which need new recruitment to be identified

Essential recruitments to the public service, including to the professional categories, for next year will be decided by a Committee of Senior Officials after reviewing the present cadre, Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government Ministry Secretary M.M.P.K. Mayadunne said.

The Committee is headed by Secretary to the Prime Minister Anura Dissanayake.Mayadunne said the Committee would give recommendations on essential recruitments to be made, retirements and areas which need new recruitments following such retirements.

The Government recently lowered the retirement age of public servants to 60 years, and accordingly, it was reported that about 25,000 public servants, including many Consultant Doctors and others in professional categories, are to retire by the end of this year. At the same time, the Government last month also directed the Heads of all public institutions not to make new recruitments next year.

Both measures were intended to reduce Government expenditure. However, it has been now decided to consider the recruitments needed for the continuation of essential public services based on the recommendation of the Cabinet-appointed Committee.
