8,000 teachers to be recruited next year

* Relevant exams already held at Teacher Training Colleges
* Development Officers can also apply
* Recruitment to be made on provincial basis following aptitude test

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said that 8,000 teachers will be recruited in early 2023.

“The relevant examinations are already being held at Teacher Training Colleges,” the Minister observed.

Minister Premjayantha also said that applications will be called from Development Officers who are aspiring to be teachers and will accordingly be recruited on a provincial basis following an aptitude test. “Such teachers will have to complete a diploma in teaching methods conducted by the National Institute of Education within three years of recruitment,” the Minister explained.

The Education Minister made these observations in reply to a question raised by Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Hesha Vithanage.

“We will hold examinations for 8,000 candidates in the Teacher Training Colleges and we shall be able to give them appointments by early next year. About 8,000 teachers are to retire next year. So we will be able to fill the vacancies from these 8,000 recruitments. Then we will hold an all-island examination for Development Officers without an age limit. Depending on the marks, they will go through an interview and get recruited to schools at provincial level,” Minister Premajayantha said.

The Minister also said, “There is a request to upgrade the training colleges to the level of universities. We have completed the preliminary level discussions regarding this request. Instructions were issued to draft the proposal and prepare a Cabinet memorandum. Our plan is to establish a university for teacher education. We can integrate all the 19 training colleges for that. It will enable us to cover more subjects with its establishment.

The undergraduates will receive a three years theoretical exposure while one year of training. So after 04 years, we will have a well trained teacher. Lecturers will be recruited according to the criteria given by the University Grant Commission.”
