New fuel suppliers after Bill is passed - Minister

Kerosene shortage will end by next week

Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera on Saturday stated that after the passage of the amended Petroleum Regulations Bill that will be presented to Parliament on Tuesday,  new fuel suppliers will be introduced in Sri Lanka within the next two months.

Addressing the media the Minister further said that the opportunity will be given for suppliers who have been already selected to import and distribute fuel to Sri Lanka.

The Minister further said that the Electricity Board will present the final report of the Strategic Planning Committee to the President and the Cabinet next week and after receiving the approval for the strategic planning, the Electricity Board and the Petroleum Corporation will pass the necessary ordinances for restructuring before December.

Minister Wijesekera further said that the current shortage of kerosene will end by next week.

Accordingly, the minister said that kerosene can be provided continuously from next week.

He said that there was a shortage of kerosene in the last season and the existing reserves were supplied by giving priority to fishing activities and that it will be possible to provide kerosene continuously from October 20 onwards.

The minister also said that next week he will take legal action against the false accusations made regarding the import of fuel, import of coal or their procurement process.
