Devdu Samudra the hockey star from Wennappuwa

Under 18 Captain of 2018, Under 12 and 20 National Schools player. Member of the Junior National Champion under 18 All Island team. Member of the Sri Lanka National Schools Champion team Member of the 2019 tour of Singapore and Sri Lanka Women’s team to Indonesia Devdu Samudra has brought immense glory to her alma mater Holy Family Convent Wennappuwa and to her motherland with her deeds in the field of Hockey.

Devdu who hails from Wennappuwa was born on April 8 2003 and admitted to her present school in 2008 participated in group events at the school primary inter house meets when she was in seventh standard her Parents ShanthaWijesiri and Nirosha Deepani Femando noticing that their daughter’s forte is hockey handed over her to the School Coach Milan Boteju in 2015. Her first attempt was in 2016 in the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Tournament under 13 and they came second and in the District Tournament they emerged winners.

Then in the following year too they won the District Tournament and in the All Island Schools Tournament they came third and in the Royal Sevens Tournament organized by Royal College Colombo in the Bowl trophy they came third In 2018 she was appointed us the Captain and came second in the All Island Schools under 16 National tournament and in the same year in the all island under 20 they got the second place and in 2019. All Island Tournament they were the second runner up. Same year at the Junior Nationals they clinched the Trophy and in the next year Provincial Tournament her school won and in the All Island Tournament held at Anuradhapura they were the champions and with,all these performances under her belt she was an unanimous choice for the tour of Singapore for the Asia Women’s Junior Nationals where six countries participated and Sri Lanka lasses got the fifth position but it was a fine exposure for Devru and after returning they took part in the Royal Sevens and they were the third in cup finals. In 2019 Sri Lanka National Tournament they were third and emerged as Provincial Champions.

They had to keep away from all sports in 2021 due to Coronavirus Then in 2022 they were the all island under 20 champions and she made another tour to Indonesia to qualify for Asian Women’s tournament and they entered the semi finals and this tour was a fine exposure to her. Finally they emerged All Island under 20 champions in the recently held National Schools Championship organized by the Ministry of Education and in this context her former Principal Rev. Sister Priyanganie and the Present Principal Rev. Sister Pavo were a tower of strength for Wennappuwa Familians.
