House should find answers to brain drain, says President

The House should discuss and find an answer on doctors and engineers leaving the country after receiving education and training from here, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday (29) in Parliament.

President Wickremesinghe pointed out that the Government spends Rs. 6 million for every medical student.

“We are in a predicament where Sri Lanka is producing, training and providing well-qualified doctors and engineers to foreign countries,” President Wickremesinghe said.

“I should thank our Health Minister for his great commitment. This Budget includes a proposal to establish three Medical Colleges in Uva-wellassa, Kurunegala and Polonnaruwa. This includes two teaching hospitals. Three universities are to present the Phd on Medical Science. This is a great step. We will get more funding to develop our MRI. We spend about Rs. 6 million for one medical student. We spend money on them with the expectation of them providing service to this country, however, they go abroad. This is a major problem. The House should discuss this matter. If we compare the number of doctors we have taught, trained and sent abroad, it seems that the aid these countries give us back is smaller. We are sending experienced people.
