Two wild elephants that were secretly buried in a cultivated area were exhumed and an autopsy was conducted on Court orders recently.
These animals had reportedly died subsequent to being electrocuted after a householder connecting a domestic electricity line to an electric fence around a cultivated land in the Anuradhapura,Tirappane Divisional Secretariat Division of Perimyankulam.
The Wildlife Officers said that the suspect who had connected electricity to the fence where the two elephants died had used a backhoe on December 19 to dig a large pit and buried the carcasses.
In-charge of Pandulagama Wildlife Office in the Northwest and Anuradhapura Zones Chandana Jayasinghe, who conducted the autopsy, said the media that one of them was a seven and a half feet tall and about 25 years old and the other was about nine feet tall and around 35 years old.
The suspect was arrested and produced in court. Investigations are continuing.
