The Urban Development and Housing Ministry said that construction of 1,996 housing units under five housing projects for artistes and low-income families will commence in the beginning of this year.
These houses are constructed under a Yuan 552 million Chinese loan, agreed on January 9, last year.
The Ministry said 1,888 houses for low income families and 108 houses for artistes would be constructed under this project. The houses for low income families will be constructed in Peliyagoda, Maharagama, Moratuwa and Dematagoda, and the housing project for artistes will be located in Kottawa.
Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga has instructed the Urban Development Authority to continue the housing projects which began constructions last year. Since the country is facing an economic crisis, the Minister has advised to focus on finding the necessary funds to implement the housing projects without burdening the treasury Representatives of the Chinese government and the Urban Development Authority have jointly conducted population studies for this purpose. House construction plans have been made by the Urban Development Authority.
A copy of the agreement related to the implementation of this project has been given to the Urban Development Authority. Accordingly, the proposals of the Urban Development Authority and the Ministry of Finance were forwarded to the company appointed for this program by the Chinese government last November.
