Woman injured after being thrown out of open cab in Badulla

A woman who was travelling in a chair in the open back of a double cab which was taking her sick mother to the Badulla General Hospital was seriously injured after being thrown out of the cab on December 31, in Taldena 17th milepost area. Her younger brother who had been driving had not been aware of it and driven a distance of about 17 kilometers and arrived at the Badulla hospital, Badulla Police said. The daughter who had been thrown out of the cab had sustained serious injuries and fallen on the Badulla-Mahiyangana main road at Taldena in the 10th milepost area and had been seen by a police officer of the Badulla Police who had been travelling in a bus to work.

He had informed the police station and put the injured in the bus and then on the way transferred her into a 1990 ambulance which was plying towards Badulla and been brought to the Badulla General Hospital. Police said that a 53-year-old resident of Bibila area had been thrown from the cab and fell to the ground and sustained serious injuries. She had been travelling in the cab which was bringing her 87-year-old mother to the Badulla General Hospital and driven by her younger brother.

The mother had been seated in the front passenger seat. Since there was not enough room, the daughter had placed in a chair in the unprotected open area behind of the vehicle and travelled thus. Police said it was her 41-year-old brother who had been driving.

The police said that on the way from Bibila to Badulla General Hospital at around 5 in the morning at Taldena 17th milepost area, the daughter who was sitting on a chair at the back of the cab had been thrown out of the cab and fallen on the road, and the brother who drove the cab, who did not know anything about it, had come to Badulla General Hospital with his mother.

A senior police officer said that when the brother stopped the cab in the outpatient department of the hospital, he had become upset because the sister who had been travelling in the rear of the cab was not there and at the same time, he had been told that the sister who was seriously injured was brought to the hospital in an ambulance.

The injured person had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital and a hospital spokesman said that she had suffered critical injuries to her head.

Further investigations are being carried out by Badulla Headquarters CI T.M.Ratnayake.
