The Attanagalla Magistrate Courts ordered the Mahara Jail Superintendent to take a suspected law student who is in remand in connection with the murder of MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala under the protection of prison officers to the Open University from the 10th to the 25th of this month to sit for his law examination.
Polonnaruwa District Member of Parliament Athukorala and Ahangama Vitaranalage Jayantha Gunawardene, his personal security officer, were killed during the public unrest in Nittambuwa town on the afternoon of May 9. The Homicide and Organized Crime Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department conducted investigations and arrested 40 suspects on several occasions in connection with the twin murders.
The lawyer appearing for the suspect stated that the suspect named Ravindu Gunawardena, who is in remand custody, is a final year law student of the Open University.The lawyer also requested to issue a suitable order for the suspect student to appear in the final legal examination.
