An official ceremony to mark the commencement of duties of the year 2023 was held under the patronage of Navy Commander Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera at the Navy Headquarters yesterday morning.

The proceedings of the event got underway after observation of two-minute silence in honour of the fallen war heroes. Subsequently, naval personnel took the oath pledging their allegiance to the public service. Addressing the naval personnel and civil staff employees present on this occasion, the Navy Commander at the outset wished them and their families a prosperous and happy New Year. Adding further, he said that the year 2022 was a challenging year for everyone.

Having praised the commitment of naval personnel towards the nation-building efforts during the tough time, the Navy Commander underlined that everyone could contribute to creating a better future through such commitments.

He also went on to mention that people of this country, who are the inheritors of a proud history, have the strength and courage to persevere in the face of challenges and lead the motherland to the path of development.

Additionally, he said that in order to succeed in the Government’s development programme for the following 25 years, from the year 2023 to the year 2048, under the vision of ‘A step forward towards the new century’, everyone should be motivated to carry out the responsibility entrusted to the Navy.

Recalling of significant achievements, such as thwarting of illegal migration attempts and apprehension of large consignments of narcotics smuggled via sea, made by the Navy in the past year, the Navy Commander was hopeful that naval personnel would set their focus right in the New Year with a firm resolve in the best interest of the nation.

Director Generals, flag-rank officers, senior and junior officers, sailors and civil staff employees were also present at the event to take the oath pledging their allegiance to the public service.

Concurrent to the main ceremony, similar events were held in each Naval Command with the attendance of naval personnel.
