The Immigration and Emigration officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) arrested a Malaysian national, who was wanted for cheating Rs.2.5 million from a businessman in Bambalapitiya, on Monday at the Arrival Terminal.
The suspect was handed over to the Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau, and he was released on bail after he was produced before the Court on Tuesday. His passport had been seized by Court.
The suspect had allegedly taken Rs 2.5 million from a businessman in Bambalapitiya as an investment for a new venture in Sri Lanka in 2016.
The businessman had lodged a Police complaint in 2021 that the Malaysian national had given him a dishonoured cheque.
After reporting to the Court, a travel ban was issued against the suspect, but he had already left the country by then.
He was arrested upon his return due to the travel ban. During interrogation, the suspect had said that he arrived in Sri Lanka as he was invited to attend a business meeting at the Agriculture Ministry.
