A two day Korfball coach training program organised by Korfball Sri Lanka with the support of the International Korfball Federation was held at the Sri Bodhi ground and Makro sports complex Bandarawatta Gampaha recently.

The training program was conducted by Poland’s National Korfball skipper Tamara Siemieniuk. ‘Korfball’ which is gaining popularity in Sri Lanka is a mixed gender sport, with similarities to netball and basketball and is played by two teams of eight players comprising four females and four males in each team. The objective is to throw the ball through a bottomless basket that is mounted on a 3.5m (11.5 feet) high pole. It is a contactless and fast game as unlike netball or basketball one has to shoot before being defended.

Tamara is the daughter of Elzbieta Siemieniuk one of the pioneers of Polish korfball when the sport was first established in 1987, and a founder member of Polski Zwiazek Korfballu. Tamara was selected to Poland’s under 16 Korfball team in 2008 and has led the Poland National team since 2014.
