Myanmar vessel’s skipper remanded till 16

Mallakam Magistrate Gayathri Selvan yesterday ordered to remand the skipper who operated the vessel, which carried 104 Myanmar nationals, until January 16.

The Navy rescued the Myanmar nationals aboard a distressed vessel in Sri Lankan waters following a mechanical failure on December 18. The boat was transporting those people from Myanmar to Indonesia illegally.

Kankesanthurai Police arrested the group of people and presented them before the Mallakam Magistrate’s Court. The Court ordered to remand the boatman at the Jaffna Prison and the Myanmar nationals were sent to the Mirihana Detention Centre.
