Two women who cheated people for Rs.3.7 Mn arrested

Kankesanthurai Police on Wednesday arrested two women over a complaint of cheating Rs. 3.7 million from an individual in Velvetithurai.

The two women aged 36 and 38 are relatives. They had deceived people and collected money, claiming to get back 70 pounds of gold belonging to them from the custody of the Trincomalee Court.

The women had obtained money, stating that they would pay back with interest after selling the gold once they got it out.

The two women were arrested on a complaint received on September 13 last year from an individual in Velvetithurai. The Police said the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is investigating another fraud, amounting to Rs. 8.8 million, allegedly committed in a similar manner by those two women. In addition, complaints of fraud have been lodged against them at Trincomalee and Point Pedro Police Divisions.

The suspects were remanded till January 12 after being produced before the Point Pedro Court yesterday.
