STF rescues child abducted over drug deal

The Police Special Task Force (STF) on Thursday rescued a 10-year-old child by taking into custody a woman who had abducted the child and was keeping him imprisoned based on a money problem that had arisen due to a drug deal. This child had been abducted on the road near the Negombo Courts Complex when he had been walking with his grandfather.

“The drug dealer woman who had arrived in a three-wheeler with two others had abducted the child,” the STF said. The child who had been kidnapped had been imprisoned in a house at the Randiya Uyana Housing Complex located at Henamulla in the Grandpass Police Division.

“The 47-year-older female drug dealer, a resident of Wellampitiya, had abducted this child due to the fact that the child’s uncle  owed her Rs. 175,000 in relation to selling drugs,” STF sources said. They also said that the child who was kidnapped from Negombo had been brought to Colombo and kept inside an apartment of the Randiya Uyana Housing Complex where she was temporarily residing.

According to STF sources, the child’s father is dead and the mother is abroad. The guardian of the child was the mother’s father. They had been residing in Kochchikade, Negombo. The STF said that the child’s uncle (the mother’s brother) was a person connected with drug dealing.

He had obtained a stock of drugs from this woman about two or three weeks ago, promising that he would pay the money after the drugs were sold.

However, he had not paid the money as promised and the woman had kidnapped the child with the intention of getting the money owed to her.

With the abduction of the child on January 5, the Organized Crime Prevention Unit of the STF based on a tip-off received on the instructions of the Commander of the STF DIG Attorney-at-Law Waruna Jayasundera a raid had been carried out by a team of Police officers under the guidance of Assistant Superintendent of Police D. S. Kulasekera in charge of the Intelligence and Special Operations Division.

“The drug-dealer woman who was arrested during this operation and the rescued child had been handed over to the Grandpass Police for further investigations.

Since it has been revealed that two other persons had been involved in the abduction of the child, further investigations are being carried out to take them into custody as well as the three-wheeler that was used in the abduction,” the STF said.
