Thehan and Anjalika look to retain SSC Tennis Titles

The top seeds Thehan Wijemanne and Anjalika Kurera will look to defend their titles at the 2023 SSC Open Ranking Tennis Championships, which is now in progress at the SSC Courts in Maitland Place, Colombo. Over 700 competitors are set to participate in this annual tournament,

which is conducted by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) and organised by the SSC Tennis House Committee.

This year’s championship is even more significant as the SLTA has placed this event as a category one tournament for maintaining excellence and high standards during the past few years.

Meanwhile, Wijemanne will start as the favourite to retain the Men’s Singles title after his success in the 2022 tournament where he defeated Kiran Vairawanathan in the final encounter.

Anjalika will also be determined to retain the Women’s Singles title for the second successive year after having defeated Janali Manamperi in a thrilling final fixture. Over 700 matches will be worked off in different age group categories including Boys’ and Girls’ Under-12 to Under-18 (Singles and Doubles), Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Veterans Over-35, Over-45 and Over-55 with the finals scheduled for January 21.

The SSC Open Ranking Tennis Tournament started in the 1980s and since then it has produced some outstanding players in the calibre of Arjun Fernando, Harshana Godamanne, Umesh Wallopillai, Jayendra Wijesekera, Rohan de Silva, Franklin Emmanuel, Sharmal Dissanayake, and many others who have represented Sri Lanka with distinction.

The SSC Open Ranking Tennis Championship has turned out to be the platform for most of the players not only to progress in their rankings, but it is also a very competitive tournament that brings out the best among the participating players.
