The investigation regarding Sisila Kumara, Senior Superintendent of Police, Monaragala Division, who was arrested by a team from Police Special Task Force on Sunday along with a stock of cannabis while on a raid to nab a group of treasure thieves has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department by the Inspector General of Police. A team of STF officers had been in an operation for about one week according to information received by the Commander of the Special Task Force, DIG Varuna Jayasundara, to nab a group of people who were trying to unearth a treasure.
Police information stated that as a result of this operation, three police officers including the Senior Superintendent of Police and a well-known cannabis smuggler from Monaragala were arrested on Sunday night.
Apart from the Senior Superintendent of Police, the other police officers arrested include the police constable who serves as the driver of the SSP and a sergeant who assists in the security of his official residence, Police Media Spokesman, Senior Superintendent of Police Nihal Talduwa said.
The cannabis smuggler known as Tile Malli is said to be a notorious character in the Monaragala area. The other two are residents of Moratuwa Egoda Uyana. Among them, the Special Task Force stated that there is a man who was identified as a person who has special abilities to detect places where treasures are buried.
It is stated that while the Special Task Force was chasing these treasure smugglers, they had gone to the official residence of Monaragala SSP in a jeep.
A team of Special Task Force gave chase to this jeep after receiving a tip-off that there was a scanner machine that can detect underground objects in the jeep. Police information stated that while this group was traveling in the same jeep that came from the official residence of the Senior Superintendent of Police, it was inspected by the Special Task Force in Thanamalvila area.
There, a person who was next to the driver’s seat of the jeep had stated that he was the SSP of Monaragala police division. He was identified as the SSP’s driver. He was also in civilian clothes. There were three people in the back seat of the jeep, whom the STF was after.
The Special Task Force officers had told the Senior Superintendent of Police that they want to check the jeep for an investigative purpose.
The STF had not found a scanner in the jeep following a search.They had also checked the identity of the three civilians in the backseat. After checking their mobile phones STF officers had found videos related to treasure digging. Later after informing superior officers the STF team had arrested those who were in the jeep.
Later when inspecting the house of the SSP, officers had found the stock of cannabis, the scanner they were looking for and several fire torches. Later they arrested the group.
After the Inspector General of Police handed over the investigation to the Criminal Investigation Department yesterday (09), a police team consisting of a Superintendent of Police of the Criminal Investigation Department had left for Monaragala from Colombo.
Police information revealed that this Senior Superintendent of Police joined the police service as a sub-inspector and has worked as a security officer for opposition politicians in the past. Information from the Police Special Investigation Unit disclosed that there are 15 investigations of the Police Special Investigation Unit against this officer.
The Criminal Investigation Department disclosed information that a special investigation is also going on as to how he got the cannabis stock found in the officer’s official residence. There is also information that a OIC of a police station in Monaragala Police Division has suddenly disappeared after the raid. Police information stated that there is a suspicion regarding the sudden disappearance of the officer.
