An election should not be held until the country’s economy is restored to some extent, said University Grant Commission (UGC) Vice Chairman Senior Professor Chandana P. Udawatte.
Speaking to the Daily News, he said although the elections should be held on time, the upcoming election should be postponed until the country passes this critical situation.
The Vice Chairman pointed out that if a large amount of money is spent on the election, it would cause an economic recession due to the prevailing situation of the country, thus repeating the long-queue era in the country.
“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, we lost investment and income from the tourists and had to stop the projects that were being conducted. Therefore, people had to suffer a lot. But, now the situation is becoming better. So, it is my personal opinion that the election should be postponed for some time,” the Senior Professor said. He further stressed that everyone from the Government and the Opposition should join hands to strengthen the economy.
