The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and the United National Party (UNP) have decided to work in unison in all possible ways in the future, on behalf of the country, SLPP General Secretary MP Sagara Kariyawasam said.
Speaking to the Media after placing the bonds for the 13 Local Government Bodies in the Colombo District, Kariyawasam said the UNP and the SLPP would hold several more rounds of discussions this week at district level before arriving at a final decision on contesting the Local Government (LG) Elections together.
He said the possibility of working together at the LG Elections was discussed at the meeting between the SLPP and the UNP on Sunday.
He expressed his confidence that the SLPP would overcome all challenges and emerge victorious at the upcoming LG Elections.
“Even though we are subjected to heavy criticism in social media, the wise people are always with us. We are very much in the hearts of the people, and not in the social media,” he commented. He said that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa would actively participate in the election campaign for the victory of the SLPP.
Replying to a question on the date of the LG Elections, Transport, Highways and Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena replied that it has to be decided by the Election Commission.
“We hope to give priority to those who are committed to the development of their respective areas when giving nominations. This is not an election that can change Governments.
The LG Bodies are to provide various local services, and what the people can do at this election is to select the best team from whom they can obtain those services efficiently,” he noted.
