Officials of the Special Investigation Division of the Foreign Employment Bureau raided a foreign employment agency in Rajagiriya and arrested the owner and another person while they were conducting interviews promising jobs for youth as labourers in apple orchards in the Netherlands while violating the rules of the Foreign Employment Bureau.
According to the Foreign Employment Bureau Act No. 21 of 1985, applications for foreign employment shall not be invited and advertised without the prior approval of the Foreign Employment Bureau.
The relevant employment agency is a legal institution, but in order to provide employment in the Netherlands, interviews have been conducted without an approved employment order from the Foreign Employment Bureau, and an extra fee of Rs. 5,000 has been charged from applicants who faced interviews, the Bureau said.
At the time of the raids, nearly 300 people had come to the place for the interviews.
After the information was revealed that this was an illegal activity, those who came for interviews had tried to assault the owners of the employment agency, causing a tense situation. Rajagiriya police officers had to be called to control the situation.
