Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna De Alwis yesterday rejected an anticipatory bail application filed by Adarsha Karandana seeking to prevent her arrest over a complaint lodged by Prof. Ashu Marasinghe.
The attorney-at-law appearing on behalf of the petitioner informed the Magistrate that his client Adarsha had identified Prof. Marasinghe via Facebook in 2019. Also, Ashu Marasinghe was a witness at his client’s marriage in the same year.
“My client had divorced her husband after few months of marriage. A few months later, Marasinghe had promised to marry Adarsha Karandana. In 2020, Marasinghe had started a company called Global Skills Development Academy.
However, Marasinghe was not able to recruit sufficient students for his academy. Later, Marasinghe requested his client to join him. She had accepted the request and she was able to earn around Rs. 200 million by recruiting 1,500 students for the academy. Marasinghe also promised to pay Rs.1.5 million as a monthly salary for her,” the Counsel added.
“In 2022, they purchased an apartment in Rajagiriya. The monthly rental of that house was nearly Rs. 575,000. Adrasha Karandana alleged that her pet was sexually abused by Prof. Marasinghe on October 26, 2022,” the Counsel added.
He further told the Magistrate his client had lodged a complaint with the Criminal Investigations Department regarding the incident. Unfortunately, no action has been taken by the Criminal Investigations Department pertaining to this complaint, he said.
The Counsel also pointed out that Marasinghe had tried to get his client arrested on two occasions. “Marasinghe has committed offences under Sections 365 and 495 of the Penal Code,” he added.
On December 24, former Presidential Advisor on Parliamentary Affairs, Prof. Marasinghe had filed a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over the video made public by his former partner accusing him of bestiality.
Senior Counsel Chaminda Athukorala appearing for the complainant told the Magistrate that Adarsha has demanded Rs.100 million from his client in order not to disclose certain video clips of his client.
