Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara instructed the relevant officials to implement the rules and regulations related to the plantation labour sector in a more efficient and practical manner, and to process the complaints from the plantation workers more efficiently and to take necessary steps to solve them without delay.
The Minister gave these instructions while addressing a meeting held at the Labour and Foreign Employment Ministry at Narahenpita on Monday (9).
This meeting was held with plantation trade union representatives to discuss the programmes to be implemented in the future to mark the 200th anniversary of plantation workers coming to Sri Lanka.
The Minister further instructed that in the process of drafting labour laws, special attention should be given to matters affecting plantation workers, and the necessary steps should be taken to resolve complaints from plantation workers more efficiently and swiftly.
The Minister also instructed officials to establish a special operations unit to look into issues related to plantation workers. Minister Nanayakkara also instructed officials to take steps to send letters dealing with various issues regarding plantation workers in the Tamil language too. He advised to make this compulsory.
Plantation trade unions made several requests from the Minister and he gave necessary advice on solving them to officials.
The Minister paid special attention to the necessity of properly maintaining sanitary facilities at restrooms, toilets, etc., especially within the employment premises of the plantation workers.
The meeting was attended by Members of Parliament Jeevan Thondaman and Vadivel Suresh, plantation union representatives, Secretary of the Labour and Foreign Employment Ministry R.P.A. Wimalaweera and Labour Commissioner General Prabath Chandrakeerthi and other officials.
