Private Bus Associations still non-committal over fares

A special discussion held between the National Transport Commission (NTC) and the Private Bus Associations regarding the possible reduction of bus fares following the reduction in the price of diesel recently ended without a final decision on Monday.

It is reported that NTC officials have requested the Private Bus Associations to take steps to reduce the bus fare by at least Rs.1.

However, representatives from the Private Bus Associations have rejected the request and stated that bus fares cannot be revised compared to reducing diesel prices as prices of the spare parts have skyrocketed.

They have also said that bus fares can be revised only if the price of diesel is reduced by another Rs.10.

They have further stressed that they will only be able to revise bus fares based on several factors including the introduction of smart cards and the provision of sufficient fuel for buses.
