Two attempting to sell fake gold nuggets for Rs. 200 mn arrested

Police Special Task Force (STF) has arrested two suspects who were getting ready to sell a gold coloured metal block for   Rs. 200 million pretending to be a gold block recovered from a treasure, along with two hand grenades in Parakaduwa. According to information that a group of treasure hunters are preparing to sell a gold nugget weighing 13.5 kilos unearthed from a treasure for Rs 200 million. The two suspects were arrested during a raid conducted by the STF officers, who acted as businessmen on January 9.

The two suspects were identified as S.M.Chandrasoma (48), a resident of Talavitiya Amuhenkande, Parakaduwa, and G. Upul (43), a resident of Embilipitiya, Henyaya. The STF officers stated that one of the suspects had fled. According to the STF officers during the raid the owner of the house, where the nugget was concealed has run away and the other two were arrested.

The STF also found a fake gold nugget weighing 2 kg and 650 grams in the house. The suspects have been handed over to Kuruwita Police Station along with the fake nugget and the two bombs for further investigation. The Ratnapura Magistrate’s Court remanded the suspects until January 24.
