The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) yesterday said that over 12,000 candidates from all parts of the country will hand over nominations to their respective Divisional Secretariats on January 18, 19 and 20 for the upcoming Local Government (LG) election scheduled to be held before March this year.
Speaking to the Daily News, SJB National Organiser Tissa Attanayaka said the SJB will contest the election along with few other political party representatives and discussions in this regard will take place at Opposition Leaders Office in Colombo during the next few days.
He said the SJB has decided to recruit more young educated males and females and also professionals as its candidates for the LG polls.
He further said countrywide public rallies and seminars will also be conducted by the SJB with their allies soon after handing over of the nominations.
Attanayaka further said many Opposition Parliamentarians have already pledged their support to the SJB and most of them are even willing to contest the forthcoming election under the SJB symbol.
He said such a situation reflects that many Opposition Parliamentarians have already accepted the SJB’s policies together with the leadership.
He said that the SJB will not allow any candidate with corruption or criminal allegations to contest on the party ticket at the election.
