No need for government to delay LG polls - Minister

Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said that there is no need for the government or SLPP to postpone the Local Government Elections.

The Minister also said that it is the responsibility of the Elections Commission to find the necessary provisions to hold the upcoming LG Elections.

The Election Commission may have the necessary funds for the elections and that is why it has called for nominations for the upcoming elections at a time when the country is facing an economic crisis and the allocations have been cut even in Ministries, he said while attending the signing of nomination papers for SLPP candidates contesting for the Gampaha district.

He further said that the Opposition’s allegations that the government and the SLPP are conspiring to postpone the Local Government elections are baseless and neither the government nor Pohottuwa has any fear of facing the elections.

Minister Ranatunga further said that there is no challenge for the government or SLPP to face this election as there is a strong group that is stronger than other political parties have been presented by the party.
