Havelock SC will look to further consolidate their position when they take on arch-rivals CH and FC in a vital SLR Inter-Club League Rugby Tournament first-round fixture at the Racecourse Grounds in Colombo on Saturday.

The Havies are currently on a roll after having recorded three successive victories and will look to make it four-in-a-row to retain second place of the league points table.

In contrast, CH and FC seemed to have lost their momentum somewhat after a promising start but this game will give them a great chance to bounce back and prove their true capabilities.

Havelock SC, of course, did not play to their true potential at the start of the season and were beaten by their traditional rivals CR and FC (21-23) in their very first match of the tournament on their home grounds. The Park Club had a narrow escape in their second outing as they just managed to pull off a dramatic 36-35 victory against a spirited Air Force SC at Ratmalana.

But thereafter, the Havies were able to settle with a good combination as they went on to beat Navy SC 22-10 more convincingly at Welisara and followed up with an impressive 31-15 win over Army SC last week at Ratmalana.

It has been a bag of mixed fortunes for the CH and FC this season as they suffered a shock 22-30 defeat at the hands of Air Force SC at Ratmalana in their opening game before cruising to a resounding 34-20 win over Navy SC at the Racecourse Grounds.

The Maitland Crescent Club had to share the points when they figured in a thrilling 31-all draw against Army SC before they crashed to a demoralising 19-27 defeat at the hands of CR and FC.

No doubt Havelock SC will start favourites, but the CH and FC will certainly look to draw inspiration from last year’s game which was quite an exciting encounter where the Park Club managed to snatch the game 20-17 in a thriller with a last-minute penalty.

Police SC v Kandy SC

Kandy SC will visit Colombo for the second time this season as they take on Police SC in another SLR Nippon Paint Inter-Club League Rugby Tournament first-round match at the Police Park on Saturday.

The defending champions, who are hoping to retain the league title for the eighth successive year will start as favourites despite going through some anxious moments during their last couple of games. Therefore, Kandy SC would like to pull off a bonus-point win in this game after two very close contests against Air Force SC (24-18) and Navy SC (21-18) respectively. Meanwhile, Police SC are in a confident mood following their first win of the tournament last week where they brought down the more fancied Air Force SC at Ratmalana.

Navy SC v Army SC

Two evenly matched teams, Navy SC and Army SC will battle it out for supremacy in another SLR Nippon Paint Inter-Club League Rugby Tournament first-round encounter at Welisara today.

Both teams have recorded just a solitary win so far in the tournament and will be determined to get back into winning ways having suffered defeats in their last outing.
