Women’s rugby in Sri Lanka will turn a new leaf when the inaugural SLR Nippon Paint Women’s 10-A-Side League Tournament gets underway at the Navy SC Grounds in Welisara today.
Navy SC will face Army SC in the curtain-raiser match of this tournament with the kick-off scheduled for 3.00 p.m. ahead of the Men’s Inter-Club first-round encounter between the same two teams.
Army SC and Navy SC have produced some of the best Women ruggerites in the recent past and this opening fixture between these two heavyweights should turn out to be another exciting contest.
In fact, this game will be a repeat of the Sri Lanka Rugby Sevens Tournament final, where Army SC had the better of Navy SC in the Cup Championship final at the Racecourse Grounds in Colombo. The other teams vying for honours in this tournament are CR and FC and Air Force SC, with their clash scheduled for Sunday at Ratmalana ahead of the Men’s Inter-Club clash between the same two teams.

January 13: Navy SC v Army SC at Welisara.
January 15: Air Force SC v CR and FC at Ratmalana.
January 22: CR and FC v Navy SC at Longden Place.
January 22: Army SC v Air Force SC Panagoda.
January 27: Navy SC v Air Force SC at Welisara.
January 29: CR and FC v Army SC at Longden Place.
