Two employees of the Borella Cemetery and the investigating officer of the Borella Police gave evidence yesterday (13) during an inquest into the murder of Janashakthi Director Dinesh Schaffter.
Obtaining evidence was held in the presence of Colombo Additional Magistrate Rajindra Jayasuriya yesterday (13) for the third day in the Magistrate’s official chamber. Obtaining evidence started at around 1.30 pm.
The examination of witnesses was held for nearly two hours in the official room and the officers of the Criminal Investigation Department as well as the Officer-In-Charge of the Criminal Division of the Borella Police appeared before the court. Chris Perera, a company director and Tania Sherman Schaffter, the deceased’s wife, gave evidence before the magistrate at her office on January 4 while a brother of Dinesh Schaffter gave evidence on January 9.
All investigations regarding the killing of Janashakthi company director Dinesh Schafter, at the Borella public cemetery, have been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department on the order of the Inspector General of Police.
The Criminal Investigation Department has launched investigations to find out whether it is a murder or a suicide.
Thus, the piece of wire found at the killing site by the Borella police, the blood-stained cloth, Dinesh Schaffter’s fingernails, blood samples, as well as local evidence found by the Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) and some local evidence found subsequent to an investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department have been forwarded to the Government Analyst on the orders of the court and a report has been called for together with a DNA test, on January 2. The Borella Police had reported to the court that on the 15th of last month, Dinesh Schaffter, the director of Janashakthi Company, had been asked to come from his home in Flower Road, Colombo 7 to the Borella Public Cemetery and had then been strangled with a wire while he was inside his car. A panel of lawyers including President’s Counsel Anuja Premaratne represented the rights of the family of the deceased.
