Former Western Province Chief Minister and Kalutara District Sri Lanka Freedom Party leader Reginald Cooray passed away yesterday morning subsequent to being hospitalized after suffering from a heart attack during a political meeting held on January 12 night.
Former Western Province Chief Minister and Governor, and SLFP Kalutara District Leader Reginald Cooray passed away subsequent to being hospitalised after suffering from a heart attack during a political meeting held on Thursday (12) night.
It is said that he fell ill while engaged in a heated exchange of words with a group of persons including a current Member of Parliament at about 8.20 pm during a meeting held at a tourist hotel located on Galle Road, in Talpitiya Wadduwa.
He had suddenly sat down clutching his chest and his supporters had admitted him to the Panadura Base Hospital.
Subsequent to being admitted to the Panadura Base Hospital, his condition had worsened while receiving treatment at the basic treatment unit and a hospital spokesman said that he was transferred to the Kalutara Teaching Hospital immediately in an ambulance.
It is also said that the discussion had taken place based on several issues including the selection of candidates to contest from Kalutara district in alliance with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and several other parties in the upcoming local government elections.
A senior spokesman of the Kalutara District SLFP said that representatives from the SLFP, National Freedom Front, and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna as well as the Viyathmaga and other organizations had participated in the discussion.
A senior political representative of the Kalutara district Sri Lanka Freedom Party said that after a problematic situation arose during the discussion, the former Chief Minister had engaged in aheated exchange with four people including a Member of Parliament.
Amidst this, the former Chief Minister had suddenly sat down while clutching his chest saying he was experiencing pain.
A spokesman of the Kalutara Teaching Hospital said that Reginald Cooray had been admitted tothe Panadura Base Hospital and later referred to the emergency treatment centre at their hospital where and passed away at about 2.00 am while he was receiving treatment in Ward No. 30.
Another senior hospital spokesman said that the inquest was being held yesterday in the presence of Kalutara Coroner S.A.Kumasaru, and that Reginald Cooray’s wife Chandika Priyangani Cooray had requested that a post-mortem be conducted.
Accordingly, the post-mortem examination was scheduled to be conducted under the direction ofShriyantha Amararatne, consultant Judicial Medical Officer of the Kalutara Teaching Hospital.
