Trains to Batticaloa will be suspended as a result of a collision with three elephants, between Habarana and Galoya in the vicinity of the Hathares Kotuwa Railway Station, yesterday (13) morning.
The Railways Control Room said the Batticaloa bound train from Colombo will have to be temporarily suspended due to this derailment.
The three elephants that had collided with the train had died on the spot and the railway track had been damaged too as a result of the train’s engine getting derailed.
The Railway Control room said that the Pulathisi Intercity train plying from Batticaloa to Colombo Fort had collided with the elephants. The Giritale wildlife veterinarian unit of the Wildlife Conservation Department had been informed so that postmortems on the elephants killed could be carried out.
