Sri Lankan exports to Germany performed above expectation from Jan. to November in 2022 increasing by 23% and grew to almost a billion Euros, said Chief Delegate of AHK Sri Lanka, Marie Antonia Von Schönburg at their New Years reception on Friday held at Taj Samudra Colombo.
“This is very praise worthy as Sri Lanka was going through an economic crisis and there was a lower global demand in 2022. For 2023 we can only hope that the Sri Lanka economy will improve and also globally the US economy will be resilient, China’s lock down will ease out and trade will see an upward trend again. We will also work towards increasing the competitiveness of the Sri Lankan SMS by fostering knowledge transfer from Germany, reducing taste barriers to facilitate better investor relations and improving the visibility of high quality products made in Sri Lanka in Germany at several upcoming fairs.”
Through information sessions and trading, we will keep working towards increasing the awareness of Sri Lankan companies on the topic of ‘German supply chain due diligence act’. We will keep highlighting Sri Lankan companies that have already made effects towards implementation due to diligence in the supply chains and we look forward to seeing the progress of these companies in the year ahead.
She said that in contrast to exports to Germany, imports struggled last year. During the period from January to November 2022 import from Germany to Sri Lanka decreased by 12% compared to the same period in the previous year.
“The ongoing import Ban put a strain on many companies as they were unable to import much needed products such as spare parts to keep not only the businesses but also the Sri Lankan economy running. “It was a true threat for some companies for survival as they also had to cope up with power cuts, fuel storage and depreciation of the Sri Lankan rupee.”
Within the framework of the German energy solutions initiative supported by the German Federal minister of economic affairs and climate action we are organizing a fact finding mission for Sri Lankan companies on ‘self supply with renewable energies’ which will take place in February.
She said in addition, with the aim of creating better warehousing and logistics solutions with increased technology automation they will be organizing a high level conference for the logistics and Maritime sector as well.
“Additional plans are currently underway to participate with a Sri Lankan exhibitor delegation at transport logistics, the world’s leading trade fair for Logistics Mobility and IT Supply Chain Management Exhibition which will take place in Munich in May 2023.
