Police said that the cause of death of the Assistant Manager who was arrested by the Police Narcotics Bureau for alleged drug trafficking was due to internal bleeding as a result of being attacked with blunt weapons.
According to the Police, this had been revealed subsequent to a postmortem examination conducted by Consultant Judicial Medical Officer Ajith Tennakoon in response to an order issued by the Maligakanda Magistrate.
The individual who had died due to the alleged Police assault is 41-year-old A.G.S. Preethi Kumara, a resident of Telwatte, Hikkaduwa.
The deceased Assistant Manager who was taken into custody near the Vocational Training Authority based on information provided by decoys, had then been taken to Police Special Task Force Police Barracks located at Maradana when the suspect had broken a bottle that had been nearby and attempted to assault the Police officers who had arrested him.
At this juncture, the Assistant Manager had sustained injuries when Police officers allegedly attacked him and had subsequently died after being admitted to the national hospital.
The suspect, Assistant Manager, had been taken into custody by a team of five led by a Sub-Inspector of Police.
Maradana Police are conducting further investigations.
