CR and FC survived a strong late rally from Air Force SC before recording a close 29-24 victory in their SLR Nippon Paint Inter-Club League Rugby Tournament first-round encounter played at Ratmalana yesterday.

The winners collected their points from two goals and three tries after having led 24-10 at half time while the Airmen responded with three goals and one penalty.

However, CR and FC came under tremendous pressure during the latter stages of the game as the home side scored twice to reduce the margin to just five points.

Dilan Fernando sliced through the CR and FC defence to touch down in the 53rd minute and Kavishka Ruchirantha powered his way to score another try in the 64th minute with Nuwan Perera converting both tries.

Earlier, CR and FC looked set to pull off a more comprehensive victory after they scored their fifth try through Thenuka Nanayakkara shortly after the turnaround to give them a commanding 29-10 lead at that stage.

CR and FC, of course, dominated the first half with Gemunu Chethiya scoring twice while Lasindu Karunathilaka and Marsheed Dooray scored one try each while Chathura Seneviratne and Nanayakkara added the extra points.

Air Force SC scored their first try in the 25th minute with Nuwan Perera adding the finishing touches under the post and followed up by converting his own try.

Women’s match

CR and FC came from behind with a fine performance to beat Air Force SC 17-12 in the SLR Women’s 10-A-Side Rugby Tournament second match played at Ratmalana yesterday.

CR and FC, who were trailing 5-7 at half time, bounced back in style as they turned the game in their favour while scoring one goal and two tries with Air Force SC scoring one goal and one try.
