Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Secretary General Stephen Twigg arrived in the island on January 10 and met with Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana and other officials for discussions last Friday (13) in Parliament.
The CPA Secretary General, during his visit to Parliament, also met with Education Minister and Leader of the House of Parliament (Dr.) Susil Premajayantha. A separate discussion was also held with Member of Parliament Yadamini Gunawardena and State Minister (Dr.) Suren Raghavan.
During the discussions, the CPA Secretary General laid special emphasis on the CPA Parliamentary Academy which was initiated as a central learning hub for Commonwealth Parliamentarians and Parliamentary officials and stated that the purpose of the institution has extended to include anyone who wishes to learn about Parliaments and key thematic topics.
Moreover, Twigg elaborated on the importance of extending the representation of women in Parliaments across the Commonwealth Parliaments.
Twigg, accompanied by CPA Head of Strategy and Engagement Emily Davies also met with the Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake, Chief of Staff and Deputy Secretary-General of Parliament Kushani Rohanadheera and Assistant Secretary General of Parliament Tikiri Jayathilaka for a discussion followed by a special tour around Parliament.
The Secretary General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association also met with senior officials of the Parliament staff and discussed future opportunities and areas of improvement.
