Senuk makes three setter game to enter quarters

Senuk Samarartne of St Sebastian’s, Moratuwa entered the boys under 17 quarter finals when he defeated Methmika Akindu of Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda with a hard-fought three-setter game 21/19,15/21,21/17 at the National Badminton championship which is now in progress at Sugathadasa Stadium.

Senuk the top seed of the under 17 singles event will meet Reshan Herath today at the quarter finals. Reshan beat Dinal Nagahawatte with three setter game 21/19,15/21,21/18. Achinthya Imegeque, Thilina Rajakaruna, Shanuka Handapangoda, Thenul Ganewatte, Pulina Wellalage, Thidasa Weeragoda also performed well to enter the boys under 17 quarter-finals yesterday.

Meanwhile, Sanuda Ariyasinghe of Lyceum International Wattala defeated his schoolmate Rantuka Rupathunga with three setter game 12/21,23/21,21/19 in the third round of the boys under 15 event which was played at the Mercantile Badminton Courts yesterday. H.K.S Liyanage defeated Tevidu Gunaratne with three setter game in the boys under 15 second round while Sasrutha Rnuga made three setter game 10/21,21/15,21/13 in the under 15 second round. Under 15 Boys doubles, and under 11 girls events will be worked off today.

The finals of the 70th National Badminton championship will be played at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium on January 22.

Meanwhile, Wajid Ali Chaudhry the Chairman of the Asian Badminton Development Committee who was the chief guest on the opening day said he was very happy to see this National championship while Sri Lanka have good progress under the present badminton administration headed by Rohan de Silva.
