Woman beaten to death, house set on fire in Minuwangoda

Minuwangoda Police said investigations have started regarding the incident where a mother  of two resident at Yagodamulla, Minuwangoda, who had deposited money from a certain party to contest the Minuwangoda Pradeshiya Sabha was beaten to death inside her house yesterday (17) and the house set on fire.

The 66-year-old mother of two named Manpitiya Arachchilage Shanthi Padmini had been beaten on the head with a blunt weapon and killed while on her bed at home.

Police said that she had been living alone in her house and had been engaged in sewing clothes.

During police investigations it had been revealed that this woman who was murdered thus had deposited money under a certain party to contest the Minuwangoda Pradeshiya Sabha at the upcoming Local Government elections.

As clothing had been set on fire subsequent to the murder, a number of items in the house had been destroyed. The reason for the killing had not been revealed until the afternoon of yesterday (18).

Minuwangoda District Judge Heshantha De Mel conducted the magisterial inquiry yesterday (18) afternoon.

The Consultant Judicial Medial Officer of the Gampaha General Hospital was ordered to conduct the post-mortem examination regarding the body and to submit a report on the cause of the death.

The Court ordered hospital authorities to hand over the body to the next of kin after the postmortem. Investigations into this murder are being carried out by a team of police officers including Officer-In-Charge of the Minuwangoda Police Station, Chief Inspector of Police N.P.S Jayalath, Officer-In-Charge of the Crimes Investigation Division Inspector of Police Nimal Karunaratne, and Sub-Inspector of Police Jayawardena under the supervision of Senior.
