Pulina Wellalage, Thenul Ganewatte, Thilina Rajakaruna and Reshan Harith have qualified to play boys under 17 semi finals at the National Badminton Championship which is now in progress at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.
The under 17 quarter finals saw Reshan Harith the sixth seed player from Prince of Wales created a major upset when he defeated top seed Shenuk Samararathne of St Sebastian College Moratuwa with three hard fought setters. Reshan won the first set 21/19 while Senuk fought back strongly to win the second game 23-21. However, Reshan bounced back to win deciding game 21/15 to enter the semi final which is scheduled to be played today.
Thilina Rajakaruna beat Achinthya Imeheque on 21/17, 21/13 while Thenul Ganewatta beat Sanuja Handapangoda on 21/17, 21/9 to enter the semis. Pulina Wellalage the younger brother of National cricketer Dunith who won the gold medal at the recently concluded South Asian junior championship once again excelled in this event defeating Thidasa Weeragoda 21/13, 21/14 to enter the semi-final.
Meanwhile top seed Ranithma Liyanage and bottom seed Dilini Ambalangoda were able to enter the girls under 17 quarter finals without much effort yesterday when they defeated L.A. Dinethya and and Vihara Ratnayake respectively at the pre quarter finals. The quarter finals of the girls under 17 was scheduled to be played yesterday night at the same venue. The under 13, 15 boys and girls round 3, 4 matches were played yesterday at the Mercantile Badminton courts while under 11 boys and girls matches worked off at the Sri Lanka Badminton courts at Maitland Place.
The Jaffna Hindu Ladies College junior shuttlers are taking part in this Junior National championships for the first time in history and a few schools from Trincomalee, Nuwara Eliya also got a chance to take part in this Nationals.
