The Jaffna Criminal Investigation Bureau on Wednesday arrested a priest of a Hindu Temple for allegedly obstructing the duty of Police officers and trying to forcibly enter the Jaffna Nallur Shivan Amman Kovil with university students and a group of relatives of missing persons, when President Ranil Wickremesinghe participated in the National Thaipongal Ceremony last Sunday.
The priest (40) was released on a surety bail of Rs.100,000. He is a resident of Hettiveediya, Nallur by the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court. The priest was advised against giving statements to the media by the Court. Notices were issued for two more individuals to appear before the Court on January 31 on the same incident.
The Police fired water cannons to disperse the protestors near the Kovil premises when the President was in attendance to the ceremony. After the tense situation, a Police Constable was admitted to the Jaffna Hospital due to injuries.
