Adi Vasi’s rights will be protected – PM

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena on Wednesday (18) assured that Parliament will work to resolve the problems and protect the rights of the indigenous Adivasis of the country.

The Prime Minister said that the indigenous Adivasi leaders came to the Prime Minister’s Office in Parliament and met him. The Prime Minister said that the group had also met the Speaker and the Leader of the Opposition.

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena also said that all the Adivasi leaders accepted his invitation to participate in the independence ceremony as a group of special representatives.

“The delegation was welcomed at the Prime Minister’s Office. We accept that we must secure the rights of the indigenous people. As the convention signed before the United Nations, the ILO Convention, the International Conference of Indigenous Peoples, we have the ability to make the representatives of indigenous peoples to represent Sri Lanka at various meetings. It should be noted that the Government is preparing policies to protect the rights of the Sri Lankan indigenous Adivasi community,” the PM said.
