Order preventing protesters to Galle Face, Presidential Secretariat

Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage issued an order yesterday (20) preventing entry into Galle Face grounds, the Presidential Secretariat and the Finance Ministry by those engaged in the protest march which was held in the Fort area, organized by University Teachers’ Association, Medical Officers’ Association, Bank of Ceylon Service Association, Telecommunication Engineers’ Association, and many professional unions including university student associations.

The magistrate issued this order after considering a motion filed by Officers-In-Charge of the Fort and Slave Island Police Stations. Declaring the order, the magistrate stated that he was issuing this order to prevent entry on to the Galle Face grounds only and that there should be no obstructions for the protest to be held as usual in respect of those who had organized it.

The magistrate who allowed the request made by the police who said that the Independence Day rehearsals are being held at the Galle Face and that the employees of the President’s Secretariat will be disturbed, said that this order was being made considering the way the agitators acted in the previous struggles (aragalaya) and the experiences of those situations.
