Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera says that it has been decided to provide the required stocks of Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) fertilizer free of charge to all farmers islandwide, which is an essential chemical fertilizer required for rice cultivation, in the upcoming Yala Season.
It was decided to provide TSP fertilizer during the Maha Season, but it was not possible to purchase the required stocks. The reason being the Russia and Ukraine conflict which led to Ukraine suspended all fertilizer exports. However, the shipment with 36,000 metric tons of TSP fertilizer is scheduled to reach Sri Lanka in the first two weeks of next month and the Minister emphasized that the entire amount of fertilizer required for paddy cultivation in the Maha Season will be provided to the farmers free of charge.
The Minister was participating in a discussion regarding the supply of fertilizers by Lanka Fertilizer Company and commercial fertilizer companies.
"This year, 75 percent of the 125,000 metric tons of Urea fertilizer which was imported was sold. At present, Agrarian Service Centres have 30,000 metric tons of Urea in the company's warehouses.
Therefore, the Ministry of Agriculture is ready to supply all types of fertilizers required for paddy cultivation in the 2023 Yala Season.
