Govt finalizing IMF condition to safeguard poor

Govt. expects China to send an official communication soon to IMF

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) had asked the Government to introduce a social safety net for the poor and the vulnerable communities, is another main criterion Sri Lanka has to meet in order to receive the board approval for IMF financial assistance.

“We have already called for applications poor and the vulnerable communities and those have to be evaluated. We have asked the District Secretaries to assign that work to some relevant officer and provide us with the final report by next month,” State Minister of Finance Shehan Semasinghe said.

The Government expects that China would send an official communication soon to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) committing its support for Sri Lanka’s debt restructure plan, State Minister Semasinghe said. Speaking to the Daily News yesterday, the State Minister said that China’s EXIM Bank has written to Treasury Secretary K M Siriwardena stating that it supports Sri Lanka’s debt restructure policy.

“When President Ranil Wickremesinghe met the EXIM Bank President, the latter promised to express its support to Sri Lanka on debt restructuring. We hope China will send its official communication soon in this regard and we await that positive news,” he said.
