Nominations for LG Polls conclude successfully - EC Chairman

The Election Commission (EC) Chairman Nimal G. Punchihewa yesterday said that the submission of nominations of political parties and independent groups for this year’s Local Government (LG) Elections was concluded successfully.

He said that there has been no large-scale rejection of nominations. He also said that the rejection of nominations of major political parties have also not been reported. Punchihewa also said that there are a few nomination rejections of minor parties and independent groups and they have not yet been received by the election head office.

The United National Freedom Front’s nominations for three councils in the Nuwara Eliya District have been rejected.

Accordingly, the nominations submitted by the party to the Agarapathana, Norwood and Maskeliya Councils have been rejected, said Nandana Galabada, District Secretary.

A nomination paper of an independent group submitted for the Ukuwela PS has been rejected.

Meanwhile, 10 nomination papers out of 163 nominations presented for 18 LG institutions in the Badulla District have been rejected.

The nominations of six recognised political parties and four independent groups have been rejected.

The rejected nominations include, the CWC nominations for the Haliela PS, the Eksath Mahajana Party nominations for the Uvaparanagama PS, Independent Group for the Ella PS, the CWC and an Independent Group nomination for the Haputale PS, UNP nominations for the Haldummulla PS, National Democratic Front and an Independent Group for the Haldumulla PS, and the UNP and an independent group nominations for the Mahiyangana PS.

The CWC is contesting for five Local Government bodies in the Nuwara Eliya District under the party symbol and seven Local Government bodies under the ‘Elephant’ symbol of the UNP.

In the Hambantota District, two nominations have been rejected. They incude the Janasetha Peramuna nominations for the Lunugamvehara PS and the nominations of an independent group for the Katuwana PS.

The nomination papers presented by the Nidahas Janatha Sandanaya under the ‘Helicopter’ symbol for the Galnewa PS in the Anuradhapura District have been rejected while the nomination paper presented for the Kantale PS in the Trincomalee District were also rejected.

The nomination papers submitted by the Tamil National Alliance for the Seruvila PS of the Trincomalee District have been rejected.
